Lightning Safety Tips

Lightning can cause a lot of damage, some of which might be covered by your standard homeowner’s insurance policy. With the popularity of electronics, it is more important than ever to take the proper precautions and get the necessary coverage to protect against costly damage from lightning. Here are some safety tips and some ways to prevent lightning from causing you any unnecessary grief.

Prevention:

Install a lightning protection system that supplies structural protection through a specified path for lightning to travel. These systems redirect the destructive power of a lightning strike towards the ground, leaving the structure undamaged. Lightning protection systems often include lightning rods or air terminals on the top of a house with wires that carry electric currents to the ground.
Surge protectors are a great way to protect your electronics from the effects of a lightning strike. They protect against surges of electricity that can fry your sensitive electronics, as well as protect against electrical fires.
If you know that a storm is approaching and you expect lightning, take some extra precaution and unplug any expensive electronic equipment such as your television and computer.

Lightning Safety:

Take shelter indoors, wherever you are when a lightning storm hits. If you are not near any enclosed building, hard topped vehicles are relatively safe shelters as well.
Avoid lakes, beaches, or other areas near open water and avoid riding on motorcycles, bicycles, golf carts, etc.
Never take shelter under a tree, because they are higher and thus more likely to be stuck by lightning in a storm. Staying low is a good way to lower your chances of being struck.
When indoors, do not stand near open windows, metal piping, or electric items. When outdoors, steer clear of telephone poles, power lines, and other objects that could conduct electricity.
