What You Should Do During an Earthquake: Staying Safe

Earthquakes pose a risk to all in the area, especially if the quake is is strong enough to shake buildings’ foundations.

As earthquakes shake the crust of the Earth, there are many dangers to consider. You may be thinking of the ground splitting open and being swallowed by the Earth itself like we see in movies and television everywhere. While it’s definitely not unheard of, the chances of that happening are slim. Your threats actually come from above – things like houses, buildings, trees, and anything else that is not secured onto a stable structure. Indoors and outdoors have their own risks, and we’re here to help you be prepared for them.

For the Outdoors

  • If you’re outdoors, stay outdoors!
  • Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. And it’s best to move with pace in case you are in the building’s falling radius.
  • Stay outdoors until the shaking stops. There’s likely going to be an aftershock, so remember to wait until it’s completely over.

For the Indoors

  • If you happen to be indoors and can’t possibly make it out, then take cover!
  • DROP to the ground, TAKE COVER under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture, and HOLD ON to the leg of the thing until the shaking stops.
  • Stay away from all glass. The shockwaves being sent through the ground may shatter the glass into shards which could hurt you.
  • Use a doorway for shelter only if the door is nearby and if you know it’s structurally sound.
  • Stay put! Research finds that most injuries occur when people move locations and things they didn’t account for fall on them.
